In light of the Black Lives Matter movement, the Tsuga Community Commission has been engaging in internal conversations around how we can best support the Black families we serve. For the past few years we’ve been working on making our programs more intentional to ensure they are accessible and welcoming to as many people as possible. Our mission to create customized programs for underserved communities obliges us to think critically and act intentionally regarding the role of race in our programming, and we want to acknowledge that we have failed in this respect.
We believe that Black Lives Matter and that actions speak louder than words. In order to better serve Oregon’s Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities, we are establishing an equity committee to undergo a thorough review of our current policies and practices, as well as permanently influence the direction of the organization. We acknowledge the need to both respond to the current movement and ensure our internal conversations center and honor the lived experiences of our BIPOC families and staff.
